Description
Concept map (CM) (Question 1): (Landscape format)
A patient is outlined in the scenario, that presents with a background, past medical history
and presenting S&S- information that is given “above the line”. Specific, cellular
pathological processes are required to be included, usually one concept or process per box
(bubble.us). For example, with the history of T2DM in Casestudy1, the exact, cellular origin
and pathophysiology process of this disease will be then explored and pinpointed, process
by process, or pathophysiological mechanism which leads to the causation of the next
mechanism. Then, this medical disease needs to be linked directly to specific S&S given
“above the line”. CS2 gives information regarding a viral infection, with S&S inclusive of
“seemed floppy” (?? What does this mean- what is the reason/ pathophysiology that can be
explored for this symptom?), or threw up milk (vomit)- why is this symptom presenting-
what is the pathophysiology, related to the presentation that is causing this?
Think “A” to “Z”. If “A” is the very first cellular process, and “Z” is the actual symptom (e.g.:
coughing), then you need to explore the specific steps to get from A to Z for every symptom
in the concept map and case study component. See the Traumatic Brain Injury example (not
an actual submission) for an example of the detail of processes required.
– 200- 250 Words approximately
– CM Included in word count (1750 -1800 W therefore for written component)
– Ensure when concept map is enlarged, writing is clear, not blurred (happens when it
is cut and pasted onto Word.doc)
– Avoid very small concept boxes and font – the CM will be rejected if it is not legible
or clear
– Preview submission in Turnitin (draft mode) so Zooming in/out of map is clear
– References no older than 7 years for peer review articles, no more than 10 years for
book (most recent edition should be used). Marks will be deducted for old research
– Blogs (LITFL), Wikipedia, general websites, ‘Uptodate’ or ‘stat pearls’ – avoid. Peer
review sources only!
– Bibliography list required for concept map and reference list for essay
– Bubbl.us recommended for layout (Free!)
– CM needs to be in Landscape format (see FAQ in ‘assignments’ menu how to do this).
Written (Question2) – (Portrait format)
This written portion relates to all information (S&S, data etc.) “below the line”.
Each sign and symptom, data (blood tests, ECG, blood gas, LDL, Hb etc.) will require to be
analysed, in specific correlation to the context of the case study, supported by specific
pathophysiological processes – like the concept map but in written format. E.g: pink frothy
sputum – there are multiple cellular pathophysiology steps that cause the colour and
presentation of this sign (this could be up to 10 specific processes). Many of the S&S can be
related to another, where this would also be justified, backed by scientific pathophysiology.
– Portrait format (different from concept map landscape)
– 1750 – 1800W count +/- 10% (mindful of concept map word count)
– See ‘FAQ’ for font, spacing, font size
– Support pathophysiology and content with in-text references (see below).
